VOTERS MAY VERIFY ABSENT BALLOTS ON WEB

The Macomb County Clerk / Register of Deeds is continuing Michigan's first online absent ballot verification system for Tuesday's school elections. Voters may track their own absent voter application and ballot, and confirm local clerks process them.

“Until Michigan citizens get no-reason absentee voting, this system will let those who are permitted to vote absentee know their votes will be counted,” said the Macomb County Clerk. "I encourage everyone who is eligible to cast an absentee ballot.”

Visitors to the Macomb County Clerk's web site http://clerk.macombgov.org/ may click the Elections link and then click "Track and Confirm Your Absentee Ballot." Voters will be prompted to enter their last name, zip code, street number, and birth date. The system shows the date the local clerk received the voters absent voter application form, mailed the actual ballot, and received from the voter the marked ballot.

A person may get an absent voter application form on the Macomb County Clerk's web site and may request a ballot if one of the six statutory reasons apply. Absent ballot application forms must be received by the voter's election official via mail by 2 p.m. Saturday, May 5 or may be requested in person until 4 p.m. on Monday, May 7.

This system has no additional cost to taxpayers. It uses existing technology to link the county's web server to the states public Qualified Voter File data.

This is not the first voting improvement by the Macomb County Clerk. Last fall, the Macomb County Clerk got bipartisan support from the Macomb County Board of Commissioners to give senior citizens an equal opportunity to get an absent voter application form. Not all seniors in Macomb County received an absent application form from their local clerks, although all seniors in some communities did receive them. The Macomb County Clerk got approval to mail absent voter application forms to the county seniors who would not have otherwise received one from their local clerk, providing the same opportunity to all seniors in the county. For the May 8 election, she again mailed absent ballot application forms to all seniors in the school districts for which she is conducting the election.

Using technology to improve service is nothing new for the Macomb County Clerk. She was the first clerk to post online the names of campaigns that violate campaign finance rules and create a system to let candidates pay fines online. She also posts county and local campaign finance statements online placing Macomb County among the top counties regarding public disclosure and accountability.
