Macomb County Clerk to cut Tuesday and Thursday afternoon hours
The Macomb County Clerk / Register of Deeds announced that due to budget cuts some services will no longer be offered on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons effective Jan. 21.
The clerk’s public court section, file room and vital records hours will be
|Monday||8 a.m. – 4:15 p.m|
|*Tuesday||8 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. (8 a.m. – 4:15 p.m. if Monday is a holiday)|
|Wednesday||8 a.m. – 4:15 p.m. (Vital records open until 7 p.m. Wednesdays)|
|*Thursday||8 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.|
|Friday||8 a.m. – 4:15 p.m.|
If Monday is a holiday, then the office will be open to the public on the Tuesday afternoon of that week. This is because in weeks where Monday is a holiday, the circuit court’s motion day changes from Monday to Tuesday.
The Register of Deeds, Jury Room and Elections Department will remain open on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. The Macomb County Clerk will continue to provide overnight delivery of vital records, such as birth certificates, marriage licenses and death certificates. Requests received on a Tuesday or Thursday afternoon could be delivered to customers the next day via overnight mail, as long as the customer pays the Federal Express cost.
“Cuts are necessary and when budgets are cut, services are cut,” said the Macomb County Clerk. “I would prefer not to make this change, but we cannot accommodate a $535,000 budget cut and the loss of 16 positions unless we change the way we operate.”
Last year the Macomb County Clerk cut her budget by over $535,000, as required by the Board of Commissioners. Over the last two years 16 positions were eliminated from the Clerk / Register of Deeds budget. She no longer has the backroom staff to process the files. On Tuesday and Thursday afternoons the Macomb County Clerk will shift staff from the public counter to process files. The office will not be open to the public, but staff will remain in the office working, filing and answering telephones.
Many services are available on the Internet at http://clerk.macombgov.org/ including the court docket entries. The clerk accepts fax filings 24x7. There is a drop box and a fax machine in the Court Building lobby available to file documents and provide date-stamped verification. Evening hours on Wednesdays for vital records will continue.
For those who want to come to the Court Building, there is now a fax machine (an “electronic drop box”) in the lobby with fax cover sheets available for fax filing. The fax filing fee is $10 for the first 30 pages. But on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons the fax filing fee will not be charged to faxes originating in the Court Building lobby. A fax confirmation page will print after every fax providing filers with written verification. For items that do not require filing verification, there is also a separate drop box in the lobby.
The Personal Protection Order Assistance Center in the Court Building will remain open Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. The PPO office staff has agreed to call the clerk’s court section when there is a need for a PPO case to be opened on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. The issue will be brought to the attention of the chief court clerk or supervisor of records and any new PPO case will still be processed immediately.
Court and Vital Records Supervisors will remain available Tuesday and Thursday afternoons to handle any emergency that may arise.
Several of the Macomb County Clerk’s technology resolutions were unanimously approved in December by the Board of Commissioners, including increasing access to justice via public wireless Internet for the Court Building and upgrading office communication to Google Premier.
“I will continue to use technology to provide as many services as efficiently as possible,” said the Macomb County Clerk.
