'Fast pass' aims to speed visits to Macomb County clerk's office

Mount Clemens— County officials today gave their preliminary approval to purchase and install a high-tech "fast pass" system that will enable visitors to the clerk's office to schedule appointments and pay for services in advance online.
The County Board of Commissioners' administrative services committee approved the proposal at its meeting this morning. The committee will forward the measure to the full board, which is scheduled to meet next week.
Under the proposal, residents will be able to use the "fast-pass" scheduling system similar to the ones used to reserve ride times at the Walt Disney World theme parks in Orlando, Fla.
Rather than wait in line at the clerk's office to access vital records, users will be able to schedule an appointment on the county clerk's website, check in on a computer terminal once the arrive at the office's lobby, and then skip the line and be served by the next available clerk.
The system will cost the county clerk's office $3,945.
Macomb County Clerk Carmella Sabaugh said the system will enable her office, which like other county departments, is grappling with a shrinking budget and the loss of employees through job cuts and attrition.
