Michigan residents have until October 9 to register to vote in the November election
Macomb County Clerk Kathy Smith today shared an important reminder for residents of the area: If you are not registered to vote or have moved without updating your voter registration information, you must register no later than Tuesday, October 9, 2018 to be eligible to vote in the November 6, 2018 election. However, if you are already registered at your current address, you do not need to do anything.
"Most people don't get interested in elections until a week or two before Election Day," said Smith. "But in Michigan, if you're not registered to vote at your current address, you must register at least 30 days prior to an election. The Macomb County Clerk's Office gets countless phone calls leading up the election from people who want to vote, but were unaware of the deadline."
To register to vote in Michigan you must be:
- A resident of Michigan and the city/township where you are registering
- A citizen of the United States of America
- At least 18 years of age (by Election Day)
- Not serving a sentence in jail or prison
You may register to vote in person at any Secretary of State branch office, your county clerk's office or your local city/township clerk's office. The address for the Macomb County Election Department is 32 Market Street, Mount Clemens, MI 48043. You can also mail a completed voter registration form to your county clerk or your city/township clerk. And for those who are eligible, an absent voter ballot application is available at: https://www.michigan.gov/documents/AbsentVoterBallot_105377_7.pdf
To check your voter registration status, find your polling location, contact your local clerk and view a sample ballot, visit the Michigan Voter Information Center website at www.michigan.gov/vote.
