LETTERS TO THE EDITOR | Make it easier for absentee voters

As the deadline approaches for paying taxes by mail, now is a good time to ask: Why can't citizens vote by mail if they want?

Michigan law still restricts who can vote by absentee ballots to seniors 60 years and older and people in five other categories. It's time to change the law so any citizen who wants to get an absentee ballot may do so.

Several states have no-reason absentee voting. Oregon even runs entire elections as mail-only because it's cheaper than hiring poll workers and increases voter turnout.

Fraud can be prevented using the same type of online ballot tracking system already available on the Macomb County elections Web page, similar to the online package tracking systems used by the post office, UPS or FedEx.

Lines at polling places will be reduced if more people are allowed to cast an absentee ballot, making it easier for everyone to participate.

If you agree with me, please contact your legislator so the law can be changed in time for the presidential election. What better way to make up for Michigan's lack of voice in the presidential primary than to greatly increase the number of Michigan voters in the general election by making it easier to cast an absentee ballot, regardless of where in the state you live or your party affiliation.

If the government will accept our taxes by mail, then the government should also accept our votes by mail.
