Macomb County clerk to stay open until midnight
Tuesday, October 11 to accept voter registrations

The Macomb County Clerk / Register of Deeds will keep her office open until midnight on Tuesday, October 11 to accept voter registration forms. Tuesday is the last day to register to vote in the November 8th Presidential Election.

“Your vote is your voice, but you must register to make your voice heard,” said the Macomb County Clerk. “Representative government is not a spectator sport. Everyone needs to get in the game.”

Macomb County currently has 624,000 registered voters. In October, 2008 Macomb County had 610,000 registered voters and in 2012, 617,000 were registered.

Michigan residents do not have to declare a political party preference when registering to vote and are free to vote a straight-ticket or a mixed-ticket on the partisan section of the ballot if they wish.

To register to vote or change your voter registration address, you may download the form at:, and submit it in person at the Macomb County Clerk’s Office on Tuesday, October 11 until midnight at the Macomb County Court Building, 40 North Main, Mount Clemens, MI 48043.

“In addition to registering to vote, I encourage everyone, who is eligible, to vote an absentee ballot this election. In the 2008 Presidential Election, 117,000 voters voted absentee, and 113,000 did so in 2012. This year, I expect over 125,000 will vote by absentee ballot in Macomb County,” said the Macomb County Clerk. Evening hours are not new to the Macomb County Clerk, who was the first Michigan county clerk to adopt regular evening hours. Her office is open until 7 p.m. every Wednesday for vital records services. Sabaugh’s office has been open until midnight on the general election day voter registration deadline since 2008.

The Macomb County Clerk / Register of Deeds has been an advocate for election reforms, including:

  • Online voter registration. Michigan residents may register online for “the draft” (U.S. Selective Service System), but in 2016 still cannot register online to vote.
  • Election Day voter registration. With computer technology there is no reason people need to register 30 days prior to an election.
  • No-reason absentee voting. The government accepts tax payments by mail without requiring a reason, but Michigan voters must declare a reason before getting permission to vote by mail.
  • Making Election Day a holiday. This would increase voter turnout, especially since Michigan does not have no-reason absentee voting.
  • Early voting. This would increase voter turnout, and reduce the number of spoiled ballots because early voters could insert their ballots into a tabulator, which would immediately let a voter know about any over-votes or other issues that would spoil a ballot.

The Macomb County Clerk / Register of Deeds has improved election administration, including:

  • Competitively bidding election supplies, saving taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars.
  • Implementing an online anti-fraud absent voter tracking system to let voters track their absentee ballots and confirm local clerks receive them in time to be counted. This system has now been implemented by the State of Michigan.
  • Hiring student election inspectors, letting students learn and earn, and training a new generation of poll workers.
  • Placing Macomb County among the most accountable in Michigan by putting county and local candidates' campaign finance reports on the Internet free of charge.
  • Promoting absent voting to those legally entitled to do so, including making it easier for overseas military members to cast an absent voter ballot.
  • Posting a list online of candidate committees and others who owe fines to the county for campaign finance law violations.
  • Accepting fax filing for campaign finance reports and online payments.
  • Archived election results back to 1838 are available online.
  • Providing text and email reminders for upcoming elections

The Macomb County Clerk / Register of Deeds has received 65 National Association of Counties “good government” awards during her career for creating innovative programs to improve service.
