EPA Grant Update

Macomb County closer to making loans to redevelop idled property

As reported in our summer issue, Macomb County was one of 240 communities throughout the nation to share in more than $62.5 million in Brownfield grants awarded through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Brownfields are defined as sites where redevelopment, reuse or expansion is complicated by the presence (or the perceived presence) of hazardous substances, pollutants or contaminants.

The grant, an award of $1 million to capitalize a revolving loan fund, will make it possible for the county to make low-interest loans available for cleanup projects.

Jeff Schroeder, program manager for Planning, is preparing to meet with EPA officials to finalize the work plan.  Once approved, the next step will be to release a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) through the Michigan Inter-governmental Trade Network to secure an environmental consultant to aid in supporting the project.

“This funding will make it possible for the county to help developers breathe new life into idled properties in areas where solid infrastructure already exists,” said Schroeder.
